reachAbility Association and BAFF 2017 recognize the support of the Province of Nova Scotia through the Department of Communities, Culture and Heritage. We are pleased to work with the Province of Nova Scotia to develop and promote cultural resources for all Nova Scotians.

Since 2000, reachAbility has successfully fused arts and disability awareness. This has resulted in artistic excellence and great opportunities to encourage diversity in the arts and culture community.

What is Disability Culture?

People with disabilities have forged a group identity.

We share a common history of oppression, and a common bond of resilience. We generate art, music, literature, and other expressions of our lives and culture inspired from our experience of disability. We are who we are- we are people with disabilities.

Disability culture is a set of artifacts, beliefs, and expressions created by disabled people to describe our own life experiences. We recognize that disability culture is not the only culture most of us belong to. We are also members of different nationalities, religions, colours, professional groups, and so more. Disability culture is no more exclusive than any other cultural tag.

No matter what the disability or location of the person with the disability we have all encountered oppression because of our disabilities.
